Seek First To Understand

The first step when Leading Up is to SEEK FiRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN BE UNDERSTOOD*. Most leaders only approach their pastor when they need something, or to get their pastor to see their point of view. Ask yourself this question, "What does my pastor feel when he sees me?"

In others words, if you notice your pastor duck when he sees you in the hallway, then you have a problem. Instead of trying to change your pastor, purpose to be a blessing to him.

A fellow children's pastor once said to me, "I'm frustrated with my senior pastor because I'm really organized and he is not." My response was, "Maybe that's why God sent you there."

All leaders have weaknesses. (Some people think they are real spiritual if they can figure out their leaders weakness.) My pastor always says, "Hire to your weaknesses." My job as an armor bearer is to be strong where my pastor is weak. Take time today to write out a list of things you can do to help your pastor.
