Fight The Giant

Don’t try to lead up unless you are willing to fight the giant. It’s easy to figure out what the churches problems are. It’s another thing to solve the problem. Be a problem solver and you will always have a job.

When I first came on staff at Living Word in 1986, we had staff meetings about twice a month. Pastor Mac was the first pastor that I worked for that would ask for my opinion. I have never had a shortage of ideas, so I didn’t hesitate to speak my mind.

Pastor Mac would respond with, “Mark, why don’t you fix that?” It took me about three staff meetings to figure this out: don’t bring up any ideas unless I am willing to take on a new project.

David was willing to take on Goliath. He saw what the problem was and was willing to meet the challenge. He knew his motives were right and with God's help he knew he would succeed.

Also, never come to your pastor with a problem without offering several solutions. I find that senior pastors like multiple choice tests. In other words never present your solution as if it is the only one. Be a problem solver and you will be a tremendous source of strength to your pastor.

My pastor likes to call the options "red ball, green ball".
